The Big Picture documentary Operation Lead Dog explores army operations in the frigid north. This operation was a combined services effort conducted with the Danish government under the oversight of the Army Transportation Corps. Operation Lead Dog began in May 1960 and comprised of several mission steps. The first step of Operation Lead Dog was having Army explores span the ice cap from coast to coast and then moving north beyond the areas covered by Peary's travels. This 65 day journey was constructed to test the Transportation Corps polar vehicles for endurance and mobility.
In addition to the primary mission of field testing polar equipment, there were several other aspects of Operation Lead Dog. They gathered important data about the polar region, captured stunning images of a vastly unknown part of the globe and attached archaeologists desivered the remains of a Paleo Eskimo camp beleived to be over 4,000 years old.
