BARHEE DATE

Common Name: Barhee Date

  • Vernacular Names: Bahri date
  • Scientific Name: Phoenix dactylifera
  • Specimens From: Israel
  • Specimens Weight: 18 gm (average weight per fruit)
  • It is a rare cultivar worldwide very little in all the USA.

Barhi is a very hardy species. drought, heat, cold tolerant. Can grow in the desert as well as in other places.

Dates are immensely popular and a stable food in the arab world since it is native to the persian gulf, dating back to at least several thousant years BC. It had since spread to most of the tropical countries where there are plenty of direct sunlight.

Barhee date is one of the popular and common dates among the numerous cultivars. "Numerous" because there are several thousands of them but most of them are virtually unknown. They are not commercially available because the taste are considered as inferior.

Barhee date can be eaten when in the raw, semi-ripe (Khalal) stage (refer to top photo). In this stage, it is golden yellow or amber and it is crispy and crunchy, similar to eating an apple. The taste is slightly sweet with a slight tinge of astringency. It is an acquired taste, especially those who taste a fresh date for the first time.

It will turn brownish and soft with the skin peeling off, when it is ripe (rutab) and it tastes sweet & juicy. This type of dates are usually eaten fresh or at least, in the ripe stage and seldom in the final dried, wrinkled (tamr) stage. At any stage, no peeling is required, just eat it as it is.

  • Barhee or (barhi) (from Arabic barh, a hot wind) these are nearly cylindrical, light amber to dark brown when ripe; soft, with thick flesh and rich flavour. One of the few varieties that are good in the khalal stage when they are yellow (like a fresh grape as opposed to dry, like a raisin).
  • It is recomanded to freeze the dates for 48 hours and then to melt it and eat it. After melting the dates become very soft and has very gentle taste. The Barhee is eaten when unripe, without preservation and drying processes, due to its low astringency.
Arabs attribute to it qualities of vitality and health, translation the name "Rahi" from Arabic is "alive and well".

    how to germinate

Soak the seeds in water for 24-48 hours. Drain and wrap seeds in a damp paper towel. Put in a ziplock bag in a warm place till sprouts appear. Plant in pots just below the surface, water lightly, and keep warm.
