In Art and Architecture, the Greek Key (Meander or Maiandros/Meandros in Greek) is a decorative border shaped into a repeated motif. Meanders are common decorative elements in Greek and Roman Art. In ancient Greece they appear in many architectural friezes and in bands on the pottery of ancient Greece from the Geometric period onwards.
Meanders were among the most important symbols in Ancient Greece. They symbolized infinity, unity and eternal love or friendship. Many ancient Greek temples incorporated the sign of Meander. Greek vases were likely the genesis for the widespread use of Meanders; alternately very ocean-like patterns also appeared in the same format as Meanders.
