Historic Printing and Printing Press
Film Collection

Communication is the transformative force that allowed civilization to grow. The invention of the printing press was one of the transformative events in this evolution. It led to the mass distribution of books, newspapers, leaflets and all sorts of printed material at affordable prices. It literally unlocked a learning explosion for the masses.

This collection of four vintage films explores various aspects of the printing industry and how printing was done in the 1930s to 1960s. Here is a brief of each film included in this collection:

  • From Trees to Tribunes - Published in 1937, this is an excellent film on how newspapers are produced from beginning to end. The film shows how the trees that make up the Chicago Tribune come down from Quebec logging operations. It shows the logging camps and how the trees are gathered and transported in both summer and winter. It then shows how the logs are converted from wood to paper by special processes at the saw mill and pulp plants and then it is on to the newspaper where it is printed up into the daily newspaper. It has a runtime of approximately 19 minutes.

  • Learning to Set Type - Published in 1959, this is a fascinating look at how the typed word was created in the pre modern era. You will see the painstaking steps that had to be taken to work with each lead character, how spacing and page layouts were handled and many other fascinating aspects of this once thriving skill. This film has a runtime of approximately 10 minutes.

  • Printing - Published in 1947, this film serves as an excellent overview of all the printing technologies that existed in the late 1940s. The films was created as a vocational film with the purpose of introducing students to the exciting field of print work and is an excellent showcase for that era. This film has a runtime of aproximately 11 minutes.

  • Typesetting: Linotype - Published in 1960, this film explores the linotype printer and how it was used every day to bring news, entertainment and more to the masses accurately and inexpensively. The film takes an in depth look at how the linotype process works and all the flexible uses it had in the machine era of printing. This film has a runtime of approximately 35 minutes.

This DVD has a runtime of approximately 1 hour 16 minutes.
