Chamomile

Ingredients: Blossoms of Chamomile.

Purpose: The chamomile tea has pain relive, antispasmodic,antiseptic action. It s used at colic, gastric, ulcer, pains in kidneys and theuric bladder.

Use: 3-4 times a day, 250-300 ml. from the infusion.

Medicinal and alternative therapy uses

The MedlinePlus database, maintained by the U.S. NationalLibrary of Medicine in conjunction with the NationalInstitutes of Health, lists over 100 separate ailments andconditions which chamomile has been traditionally used, for which it lists onlya few as having undergone scientific study on animals and/or humans. Moreover,through the MedlinePlus database, these agencies explicitly warn,"although chamomile is widely used, there is not enough reliable researchin humans to support its use for any condition." Of the dozens oftraditional claims listed, this database explicitly lists only fifteenconditions in which any animal or human scientific testing has ever been done.Of these fifteen, the NIH also rated the scientific conclusions on fourteen ashaving "unclear scientific evidence" to recommend either for oragainst the use of chamomile as a treatment for such conditions (cardiovascularconditions, common cold,diarrhea in children, eczema, gastrointestinalconditions, hemorrhagiccystitis, hemorrhoids,infantile colic, mucositis from cancertreatment, quality of life in cancerpatients, open penile sores, skin inflammation, sleep aid, vaginitis, and wound healing). It also rankedone negatively, as having "fair scientific evidence against" such ause (post-operative sore throat/hoarseness due to intubation). In short,according to these two agencies, there remains insufficient scientific evidenceto produce a medical recommendation for any medicinal or therapeutic use ofchamomile in extract, ointment or infusion form.

MedlinePlus and The National Center for Complementary andAlternative Medicine further caution of rare allergic reactions, atopic dermatitis (skinrash), drowsiness or sedation, the potential to stimulate the uterus, leading tomiscarriage and the unevaluated safety of breastfeeding while takingchamomile, although some sources do not contraindicate breastfeeding.Interactions with other herbs and medicines have not been well studied forchamomile.

MedlinePlus also states that Chamomile may increasedrowsiness if taken with lorazepamor diazepam, barbiturates, phenobarbital, narcotics, antidepressants and alcohol
