JEWISH ROOTS IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN

ECONOMY by Mendel Kaplan * Pre-Owned in Excellent practically LIKE Condition * 1986, Hard Cover with Dust Jacket Cover is Blue with gold gilt "In 2002, Kelvyn Abramowitz wrote: "This is an economic history of SA Jewry stretching back to the late 1700 s early 1800 s. It details our ancestors role in the early agricultural economy through the itinerant peddlers or smouses to the mining Randlords to the contributions to the financial, fashion and retailing sectors to name just a few. This is a well-researched book by the eponymous benefactor of the Jewish Studies department at the University of Cape Town." Kaplan starts the story in the 17th century. For example, talks about Elie Susman (AKA Elia) (1880-1957). He was the founder of Susman Brothers, an African business partnership and a director of approximately 50 companies and chairman of the Rhodesian Mercantile Holding Co. Elie Susman was born to Jewish parents in Rietavas, western Russia, now Lithuania. He had an older brother Harry (b. 1876) who was his business partner. He emigrated to South Africa in the late 1890s. He held the first mining license over what became the Rhokana mine. He went to South Africa where, with a friend from they established the WOOLWORTHS stores in Transvaal. * Author : Mendel Kaplan and Marian Robertson * Subject and Topics : Genealogy, South African economic and social history and biography, Jewish Immigration to South Africa. * Language : English * Binding : Hard Cover with Dust Jacket * Publisher : C.
