Description -- California Pottery, Melinda Shape, Artist: Royal Hickman. Handpainted Brown and Mustard Laurel wreath border, Gadroon leaf edge. Excellent used condition except for a few very small flea bites. This is a 9 1/2" bowl. Current (06/09) replacement value is $28.99. Issued from 1942 to 1950. It was still available by special order up until 1954. As far as I know this pattern was not made after Metlox bought out Vernon Kilns in 1958.
Historical Data -- Vernon Kilns was established in 1931 when Faye Bennison purchased the old Poxen China Facility. They operated from 1931 until bought by Metlox in 1958 to become their Vernonware division.
Royal Hickman -- In January 1942 Vernon Kilns introduced Melinda, an elaborate shape designed by Royal Hickman. Hickman was an artist who did contract work for many companies in metal, paper, glass and metal medias. He moved about the country and passed away in 1969 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Hickman was an artist on exceptional ability and a very characteristic style.
